Tunnel lighting must remain visually continuous across long runs while coping with dust, vibration, moisture and limited service access. ZBL supports integrators with configurable LED strip, neon flex and wall-washing formats for road, pedestrian, utility and transit passage projects.

THE PROJECT CHALLENGE

A solution starts with site conditions—not a product code

A tunnel is not one uniform lighting zone. Entrance adaptation, transition areas, the interior zone, emergency routes and decorative or wayfinding lines have different jobs. A reliable specification begins with mounting position, viewing distance, ambient exposure and maintenance access—not simply watts per metre.

Where flexible linear lighting adds value

  • Continuous guidance along walls, handrails, evacuation routes or service passages
  • Low-profile accent lighting where rigid luminaires are difficult to integrate
  • Portal, façade and architectural feature lighting around tunnel entrances
  • Supplementary wall washing in non-critical visual zones

Life-safety and primary roadway illumination must still be designed and approved by the project engineer. Flexible strip products should only be used for the role defined in the approved lighting and electrical plan.

DESIGN PRIORITIES

Turn the desired appearance into a buildable, maintainable lighting specification.

Control glare and brightness transitions

Specify shielding, mounting angle and output by zone. A bright exposed line within the driver or passenger field of view can reduce comfort even when measured illuminance is adequate.

Design for the actual environment

Confirm water exposure, wash-down method, dust, exhaust contaminants, vibration and operating temperature. The sealing method must include cable entries and end terminations, not just the strip body.

Plan voltage drop before installation

Long tunnel runs need calculated feed points, conductor sizes and circuit lengths. Segmenting the system makes faults easier to isolate and prevents visible dimming at the far end.

Make maintenance predictable

Use repeatable lengths, labelled circuits, accessible drivers and replaceable mounting channels. A service plan is especially important where lane closures or restricted access are costly.

Match the lighting format to the project requirement

Product choice should follow the viewing direction, visual effect, environment, control system and installation detail.

Choose by lighting task

  • Wall or ceiling wash: an IP-rated flexible wall washer can project light farther than a diffused neon line.
  • Continuous guidance: side-bend or top-bend silicone neon produces a defined, low-dot line around curves.
  • Service passages: protected high-efficiency white strip in an aluminium profile can provide practical local illumination.
  • Dynamic architectural effects: addressable products are possible only where controls, network maintenance and local regulations permit.

Specify measurable requirements

Include target illuminance or luminance, colour temperature, CRI, allowable glare, dimming protocol, circuit length, ingress rating and ambient temperature. For road tunnels, the complete design should follow the applicable national road-lighting and tunnel-safety standards.

SYSTEM & INSTALLATION

Specify more than the LED strip

A dependable result includes power, controls, cables, connections, mounting, environmental protection and service access.

Separate the lighting into serviceable circuits

Locate drivers and control equipment in accessible, ventilated enclosures. Provide surge protection and suitable grounding where required by the electrical design. Avoid burying field joints behind finishes.

Treat every joint as part of the IP system

Factory terminations are preferred for exposed runs. Where field connections are unavoidable, use the approved connector, sealant, cable gland and curing procedure, then test before the installation is closed.

Validate one representative section

Build a mock-up at the real mounting height. Check line continuity, glare, camera appearance, voltage drop, dimming behaviour and emergency-mode interaction before releasing the full quantity.

Can LED strip be used as the main light in a road tunnel?
Only when the complete luminaire system and photometric design meet the applicable tunnel standard. Flexible linear lighting is often better suited to guidance, supplementary illumination and architectural zones. The project engineer must approve its final role.
Which IP rating is suitable for tunnel lighting?
It depends on the mounting location and cleaning method. IP67 or a suitably engineered protected system is common for wet or wash-down areas, but IP rating alone does not cover chemicals, cable entries, joints or prolonged immersion.
How do you prevent brightness loss over a long run?
We calculate circuit length, conductor size, feed position and strip voltage, then divide long lines into serviceable sections. A sample circuit should be measured at both the beginning and end before mass installation.
Can tunnel lighting connect to DALI or DMX controls?
Yes, compatible drivers or decoders can be specified for many products. Share the control topology, dimming range, emergency behaviour and cable distances so the full system can be checked.
