Linear light in floors, paving and landscape edges can clarify routes and create a strong architectural signature. The difficult part is not producing the line—it is protecting the system from foot or vehicle loads, standing water, cleaning and future surface repairs.
THE PROJECT CHALLENGE
A solution starts with site conditions—not a product code
Ground lighting should be detailed as a construction assembly. Channel, cover, drainage, cable route, expansion joint and access point all affect reliability. A nominally waterproof strip placed in an undrained groove is not a durable system.

For drive-over or high-load locations, the structural channel and cover must be rated by the system supplier or project engineer. Flexible LED strip alone is not a load-bearing in-ground luminaire.
DESIGN PRIORITIES

Turn the desired appearance into a buildable, maintainable lighting specification.
Design drainage before sealing
Slope the channel and provide a path for water to leave. Repeated immersion at joints is a different condition from occasional rain exposure.
Carry loads through the structure
Footfall, carts and vehicles must be transferred through a suitable profile, cover and substrate. Do not allow point loads to reach the LED body.
Manage glare and contrast
A bright line at eye level is uncomfortable, and an overly bright floor line can hide nearby steps. Coordinate output with surrounding ambient light and accessibility needs.
Allow replacement without demolition
Use accessible junctions and removable sections where practical. Record cable routes and module lengths before paving or finishes conceal them.

Product choice should follow the viewing direction, visual effect, environment, control system and installation detail.
Select the luminous format and the construction system together
- Recessed silicone neon: creates a continuous line in protected pedestrian details.
- Flexible wall washer: can graze adjacent walls or landscape surfaces from a ground-edge position.
- Compact side-emitting profiles: help direct light away from the viewer.
- Custom factory lengths: reduce vulnerable field joints in exposed locations.
Clarify “in-ground” versus “near-ground”
A strip concealed in a raised planter edge has different load and water exposure from a flush line installed within paving. Draw the section detail and identify whether the light is walk-over, drive-over, submerged, snow-covered or cleaned by pressure washer.

SYSTEM & INSTALLATION
Specify more than the LED strip
A dependable result includes power, controls, cables, connections, mounting, environmental protection and service access.
Prepare a full-size construction mock-up
Include the actual substrate, channel, diffuser, sealant and surface finish. Pour or spray water over the detail and inspect drainage before approving the production method.
Use factory leads where water can collect
Route uninterrupted cable from the light to an accessible dry junction. Protect cable crossings and allow for paving movement, thermal expansion and settlement.
Commission after surrounding work is complete
Construction debris and sealants can damage optics. Clean the channel, verify drainage, test each circuit and record the final installation before handover.

Can flexible LED strip be driven over by vehicles?
Not by itself. A drive-over installation needs a structurally rated channel, cover and substrate that transfer the load away from the LED. The complete assembly must be approved for the expected axle and point loads.
Is IP67 enough for in-ground lighting?
Not when water can remain around the product or joints. Exposure, drainage, immersion time, termination design and local conditions must all be reviewed; IP rating alone does not guarantee an in-ground system.
How can ground lighting be replaced after paving is finished?
Plan removable channel sections, accessible junctions and standard module lengths before construction. Photograph cable routes and keep spare factory-finished modules for critical projects.
What colour temperature works for pathways?
Warm white often suits hospitality and landscape materials, while neutral white can improve functional clarity. The choice should consider surrounding light, surface colour, contrast and local guidance requirements.
