Mining environments place unusual demands on lighting: dust, vibration, moisture, abrasion, long cable routes and difficult maintenance. We help OEMs and integrators develop low-voltage linear lighting for approved non-hazardous zones, machinery, workshops and visual guidance applications.

THE PROJECT CHALLENGE

A solution starts with site conditions—not a product code

The first question is not brightness—it is area classification. Underground mines may contain methane, coal dust or other explosive atmospheres. Standard LED strip and neon flex must never be presented as explosion-protected or intrinsically safe without certification for the exact assembly and jurisdiction.

Appropriate project discussions

  • Task lighting integrated into eligible machinery enclosures or operator stations
  • Guidance and identification lines in areas formally classified as non-hazardous
  • Surface workshops, maintenance bays, wash areas and processing support spaces
  • OEM subassemblies that will be evaluated as part of the finished equipment

If the location is hazardous, send the zone or class/division, gas or dust group, temperature class and required mine approval. We will state clearly whether a suitable certified solution is available; otherwise the application must use an approved hazardous-location luminaire.

DESIGN PRIORITIES

Decisions that determine performance in the finished installation

Turn the desired appearance into a buildable, maintainable lighting specification.

Confirm classification in writing

Ask the mine engineer for the formal hazardous-area classification and required approvals. Product selection cannot be based on a verbal description such as “dusty” or “underground.”

Protect against mechanical damage

Use recessed mounting, guards or robust channels where tools, rock, cables or moving equipment could strike the light. Flexible construction does not make a strip impact-proof.

Control dust, water and chemicals

Review pressure washing, slurry, oils, cleaning chemicals and cable-entry exposure. Materials and sealing details must suit the actual contaminants.

Simplify fault isolation

Divide long lines into labelled replaceable modules with accessible connections. Standardised spare lengths reduce downtime during maintenance.

Match the lighting format to the project requirement

Product choice should follow the viewing direction, visual effect, environment, control system and installation detail.

Match construction to the installation

  • Protected white strip: for equipment cabinets and clean, enclosed task-lighting locations.
  • Silicone neon flex: for visible guidance lines that need diffusion, flexibility and environmental protection.
  • Compact profiles: for machinery where available space and snag risk are limited.
  • High-CRI options: where inspection teams need more accurate colour recognition.

Do not substitute IP rating for hazardous-location approval

IP67 or IP68 describes ingress protection under defined tests. It does not mean explosion-proof, flameproof, intrinsically safe, MSHA-approved or suitable for a classified mine area. Required compliance must be verified for the complete product and installation.

SYSTEM & INSTALLATION

Specify more than the LED strip

A dependable result includes power, controls, cables, connections, mounting, environmental protection and service access.

Keep power conversion accessible

Place drivers, protection devices and connectors in approved enclosures with suitable thermal management. Secure cables against vibration and abrasion, and provide strain relief at every transition to moving equipment.

Test the real duty cycle

A prototype should be evaluated for temperature rise, vibration, contamination, cleaning and supply variation. For vehicle or battery-powered equipment, confirm transient protection and operating voltage with the equipment engineer.

Document the boundary of supply

Drawings should identify the strip, extrusion, cable, connectors, driver, enclosure and installer-supplied items. Compliance claims must refer to the exact evaluated assembly—not a visually similar component.

Are ZBL LED strips explosion-proof or intrinsically safe?
Do not assume so. A standard waterproof LED strip is not an explosion-protected product. Tell us the exact certification, zone or class/division and mine authority requirements; suitability must be confirmed for the complete model and assembly.
Can LED strip be integrated into mining machinery?
It may be possible in an eligible location as an OEM component. The equipment manufacturer must assess electrical protection, temperature, vibration, ingress, cable routing and final-machine compliance.
What is the best voltage for mining equipment lighting?
The correct voltage follows the machine or site electrical architecture. Low voltage can simplify integration, but cable loss, protection, transients and fault energy still require engineering review.
Can you supply replaceable custom-length modules?
Yes. We can discuss repeatable cut lengths, factory leads, connectors, mounting channels and labels so maintenance teams can hold practical spare modules.
