Successful pool lighting depends on more than an IP number. Cable entries, chemicals, water temperature, electrical separation, mounting access and local pool-zone rules all affect the finished system. We help designers and contractors turn the visual concept into a practical linear-lighting specification.

THE PROJECT CHALLENGE

A solution starts with site conditions—not a product code

Use light to define steps, coves, water features and surrounding architecture without creating glare for swimmers or guests. The safest solution begins by separating truly submerged locations from splash zones, deck details and nearby dry architectural areas.

The installer must follow local pool electrical codes for extra-low voltage, isolation, bonding, equipment location and permitted luminaires. Never place a generic “waterproof” strip underwater.

Turn the desired appearance into a buildable, maintainable lighting specification.

Define the wet zone accurately

Mark submerged, splash, deck and dry locations on the drawing. Each zone may require a different product, cable route, power location and approval.

Design the termination first

Many water-related failures start at cut ends, cable entries or field joints. Prefer factory-sealed lengths and route the continuous cable to a dry, accessible junction point.

Check chemical and UV exposure

Chlorine, salt, cleaning agents, sunlight and warm water can affect jackets, adhesives and metals. Share the water treatment and mounting materials before approval.

Avoid glare and visible dots

Mount the luminous line outside normal sightlines or use a diffused neon profile. Test the result both with still water and with surface reflections.

Product choice should follow the viewing direction, visual effect, environment, control system and installation detail.

Product routes by location

  • Continuous immersion: use only a purpose-designed IP68 system with factory-sealed leads and written confirmation for the intended depth and water chemistry.
  • Pool edge or splash zone: sealed silicone neon can provide a smooth line when detailed with drainage and protected connections.
  • Dry cove near the pool: high-CRI strip in an aluminium profile can deliver softer architectural light.
  • Colour effects: RGB or RGBW supports scenes, while addressable effects require more control planning and should not compromise safety or maintenance.

Colour choices

Cool white can sharpen blue water, while warm white suits stone and hospitality interiors. RGBW is usually more useful than RGB alone when the project needs both saturated colour and a credible white scene.

SYSTEM & INSTALLATION

Specify more than the LED strip

A dependable result includes power, controls, cables, connections, mounting, environmental protection and service access.

Keep drivers and connections out of restricted wet zones

Locate power supplies, controllers and service joints according to local pool regulations. Use electrical isolation, protection and bonding as specified by the qualified electrical designer.

Do not cut an immersion product on site

Confirm every finished length and cable exit before production. Factory sealing reduces field risk, but the installer must still protect the cable route and test the assembly before filling the pool.

Commission in stages

Perform insulation and functional checks before concealment, again before water is introduced, and after the pool reaches operating conditions. Keep model, batch, circuit and location records for future service.

Questions to resolve before sampling

Practical answers for designers, contractors and purchasing teams preparing a project specification.

Is every IP68 LED strip suitable for underwater pool use?
No. Confirm whether the exact product, end seals, lead cable and materials are approved for continuous immersion, the planned depth, water temperature and chemical environment. IP68 is not a universal pool approval.
Should RGB or RGBW be used for a hotel pool?
RGBW is often preferred when the design needs both colour scenes and a useful white setting. The best choice also depends on controls, scene programming, cable count and maintenance access.
Can pool LED strips be cut and sealed on site?
For submerged or difficult wet locations, factory-finished lengths are strongly preferred. Field cutting introduces a critical sealing variable and should only follow an approved product-specific procedure.
Where should the LED drivers be installed?
Outside restricted pool zones in a dry, ventilated and serviceable location permitted by local electrical code. Cable length and voltage drop must be calculated before the driver position is fixed.
