What does led light bar model 2835 mean?

Published: November 7, 2022 Updated: August 1, 2024 2365

SMD means surface-mounted device. In an LED strip, the light-emitting package is soldered directly onto the flexible circuit board. Numbers such as 2835, 3528 and 5050 normally describe the package dimensions in tenths of a millimetre—not brightness or quality.

SMD LED packages mounted on a flexible LED strip circuit board

For example, a 2835 package is approximately 2.8 × 3.5 mm, while a 5050 package is approximately 5.0 × 5.0 mm. The larger package may contain several light-emitting dies, but size alone does not tell you the strip's lumen output, efficiency or lifetime.

Common SMD packages used on LED strips

  • SMD 2835: widely used for white-light strips because it can offer good efficacy and thermal performance.
  • SMD 3528: a compact, established package often used where moderate output is sufficient.
  • SMD 5050: a larger package commonly used for RGB, RGBW and higher-output products.
  • SMD 2216: a small package that allows high LED density and a smoother line of light.

What actually determines performance?

Compare finished-strip data rather than choosing by package number. The useful specifications are measured lumens per metre, watts per metre, efficacy, CRI, color consistency, PCB copper weight and the permitted operating temperature. LED density also matters: more packages per metre can reduce visible dots, but it does not automatically guarantee higher brightness.

A 2835 strip from one supplier may perform very differently from another because LED binning, drive current, PCB resistance and thermal design are different. Ask for test data for the exact voltage, CCT, CRI and waterproof construction being quoted.

How to choose for a project

For efficient white task or architectural lighting, start with our SMD LED strip range and compare lm/W under equal conditions. For color-changing installations, a 5050-based RGB LED strip may be appropriate. Where a dot-free appearance is the priority, compare the finished effect with a COB LED strip.

Also check strip width, cutting length, voltage drop and profile depth before ordering. A sample installed in the intended aluminum channel and diffuser gives a more reliable result than viewing the bare strip.

Frequently asked questions

Does a bigger SMD number mean a brighter LED?

No. It mainly identifies package dimensions. Brightness depends on the LED design, bin, current and strip construction.

Is SMD better than COB?

Neither is universally better. SMD offers many package and color options; COB is useful when a continuous, low-dot light line is required.

Can I replace one SMD type with another?

Not by package name alone. Electrical footprint, voltage, current, thermal limits and circuit design must all match.
