What is the Typical Lifespan of COB LED Strip Lights?

Published: May 7, 2024 1746

A quality COB LED strip is often designed for tens of thousands of operating hours, but a single lifespan number cannot predict every installation. Junction temperature, drive current, power quality, materials and operating schedule determine how quickly light output declines.

What “lifespan” actually means

LED life is commonly discussed as lumen maintenance, such as the time until output falls to a defined percentage of its initial value. LM-80 data concerns tested LED packages; it is not automatically the lifetime of the finished strip, driver or installation.

Factors that shorten service life

  • Heat: sealed spaces and poor contact with the profile raise component temperature.
  • Excess current: overvoltage or aggressive driving increases heat and stress.
  • Poor power quality: unstable or undersized drivers can cause flicker and overheating.
  • Voltage drop: uneven electrical conditions create inconsistent output along long runs.
  • Moisture and chemicals: damaged seals or incompatible materials can corrode conductors.
  • Repeated bending: sharp bends fatigue the flexible PCB and solder joints.

How to improve reliability

Use an aluminum profile when specified, keep the driver ventilated, avoid exceeding the rated ambient temperature and design proper feed points. Test the completed system at full output and record voltage and temperature at representative locations.

What to ask the supplier

Request data for the exact CCT, CRI, voltage and waterproof version. Ask about PCB copper, rated operating temperature, LED package test data, production binning and warranty conditions. Compare finished-strip efficacy using our LED strip efficiency guide.

Frequently asked questions

Does COB last longer than SMD?

Not automatically. Product design, component quality and operating temperature matter more than the label alone.

Does dimming extend life?

Lower average power can reduce heat, but driver quality and installation still control reliability.

When should a strip be replaced?

Replace it when output, color consistency, electrical safety or physical condition no longer meets the project requirement.
