COB LED strip is an excellent choice when a continuous line of light and compact profile matter, but it is not automatically better for every project. Its value depends on brightness, color quality, thermal design, repair requirements and cost.

• Useful in shallow profiles: uniformity can be achieved with less distance to the diffuser.

• Field repair: tiny chips beneath the phosphor layer are not individually replaceable.
• Heat still matters: dot-free appearance does not remove the need for thermal management.
• Specification varies: CRI, efficacy and color consistency differ substantially between products.
• Bending limits: twisting or bending across solder joints can damage the PCB.
• Optical color: the phosphor surface may look different when unlit, which can matter in exposed details.

When COB is the better choice
