Silicone Extrusion vs PU and Epoxy Waterproof LED Strips

Published: August 13, 2026 4

Two waterproof strips can carry the same IP rating and age very differently. The reason is that IP testing describes ingress protection—not long-term resistance to UV, heat, yellowing, chemicals or repeated bending.

Quick answer

Silicone extrusion is generally the strongest choice for premium outdoor linear lighting because it combines flexibility, temperature performance and UV stability. PU can offer useful toughness and chemical resistance depending on formulation. Epoxy coating is economical for light splash protection indoors but is rarely the best material for exposed long-life projects. Final selection must be based on the actual compound and test data.

Silicone extrusion

In an extruded construction, silicone forms a continuous jacket around the strip or becomes the optical body of neon flex. It can provide a consistent cross-section, controlled diffusion and robust sealing when factory terminated.

Advantages

  • Good flexibility over a broad temperature range
  • Generally strong UV and weather resistance
  • Suitable for shaped profiles and neon optics
  • Good long-term clarity with the right formulation

Watch points

  • Material quality varies
  • Fully enclosed construction changes heat flow
  • Field cutting requires a validated sealing process
  • Some oils and chemicals require compatibility testing

Polyurethane encapsulation

PU can be formulated for abrasion, mechanical toughness and resistance to selected chemicals. It may be used as a coating or potting material. Performance varies widely with chemistry, cure and UV stabilisation.

Ask whether the specific compound is aliphatic or aromatic, whether it is intended for exterior exposure, and what happens after heat/UV ageing. A material that looks excellent when new may yellow or harden in service.

Epoxy coating

Epoxy-coated strips are familiar and economical. They can protect against touch and occasional moisture in controlled interiors. Over time, many formulations become yellow, rigid or cracked under UV and thermal cycling. The coating can also trap heat and make repair difficult.

Questions to send the supplier

  • What is the exact encapsulation method?
  • Has the material been UV and thermal-ageing tested?
  • What chemicals were used in compatibility testing?
  • What is the permitted bend radius and bending axis?
  • How are ends and cable entries sealed?
  • Is an aluminium profile required?
  • What depth and duration apply to any IP68 claim?

FAQ

Does silicone never yellow?

No material is immune to all ageing. Good silicone generally offers strong UV stability, but formulation, temperature and contaminants matter.

Can I identify material by touch?

Not reliably. Request construction and test information.

Which material is best for pools?

Material choice is only one part. Electrical zones, local code, water chemistry, connections and approved use must all be addressed.
