Planning Power Feeds for Long Mining LED Strip Routes

Published: September 8, 2026 Updated: October 21, 2026 5

Long mining routes should be divided into electrically defined branches with accessible supply points. The right feed layout depends on the approved strip construction, feeder resistance and acceptable far-end performance, not merely on the total route length.

Distinguish the two sources of voltage loss

Voltage can be lost in the cable leading to the strip and along the strip itself. Moving the driver closer may help the feeder without changing the strip's internal loss. Adding a supply point can help a long branch, but it must use a connection arrangement supported by the manufacturer and accepted for the installation.

For a simplified example, a feeder with 0.2 ohm total loop resistance carrying 5 A loses 1 V and dissipates 5 W. At 10 A, the same feeder loses 2 V and dissipates 20 W. These figures illustrate resistance effects; they are not a cable-sizing recommendation or a permitted temperature rise.

Choose an arrangement the maintenance team can isolate

Draw each branch as a separate service unit. Show where its power originates, how it is isolated and which lighting remains available when it is removed. A route that looks continuous can still be electrically segmented. Give branches durable identifiers that match the drawing and the replacement-stock list.

Do not connect independent driver outputs together casually. Their outputs may not be designed for parallel operation, and a second feed can leave supposedly isolated conductors energized. Any dual-feed arrangement needs a documented design, compatible equipment and an isolation procedure that accounts for every source.

Test the most demanding operating condition

Specify the minimum expected supply condition, full load and a representative thermal state. Record voltage at the driver output, strip input and far end, along with light output at agreed locations. A visual check immediately after switching on can miss deterioration after the system warms.

Where the strip is used in a classified location, additional feed points must preserve the approved construction. Use factory-prepared sections when required. The design should make it possible to replace one damaged section without improvising a splice underground or disturbing a long working route.

What the power-feed drawing should show

  • Driver location and every supply path.
  • Feeder length and conductor specification.
  • Branch length, load and connection limits.
  • All isolation points, including any alternative supply.
  • Commissioning measurement locations and acceptance criteria.

Questions buyers ask

Can I feed both ends to fix dimming?

Possibly, but only with an approved electrical layout. Multiple power sources and return paths require particular care.

Is brightness alone a useful voltage-drop test?

It is incomplete. Measure the circuit and compare agreed lighting results under load; regulation can conceal electrical losses until a limit is reached.
