What is the Meaning of Lumens in LED Strip Lights?

Published: February 7, 2023 Updated: August 7, 2024 1596

Lumens measure the total visible light produced by an LED strip. For strip lighting, suppliers normally state lumens per metre (lm/m) or per foot. This tells you output along the product, but not how much light reaches a desk, shelf or floor.

Lumens, lux, watts and lm/W

  • Lumens: total light output.
  • Lux: lumens falling on one square metre of surface.
  • Watts: electrical power consumed.
  • Lumens per watt: efficacy—how efficiently electricity becomes visible light.

A high-wattage strip is not necessarily brighter, and a high-lumen strip may not create adequate lux if it is installed far from the working plane or behind a lossy diffuser.

Estimate the output required

Start with the illuminance target for the application, then account for mounting height, beam spread, wall reflectance, diffuser transmission and spacing between runs. Decorative accents need far less output than task lighting. For commercial projects, verify the design with photometric data or a mock-up.

Compare data sheets fairly

Check whether output was measured for the bare strip or the waterproof version, at what CCT and CRI, and at what temperature. Silicone jackets and diffusers reduce delivered light. Warm-white and high-CRI versions may also produce different lumen values.

Frequently asked questions

How many lumens do I need?

It depends on the target lux, area, mounting geometry and optical losses; there is no universal lumen-per-metre value.

Does 6000K mean more lumens?

No. Kelvin describes color appearance. Compare the measured lumen value for the exact CCT.

Why is the installed strip less bright than the data sheet?

Diffusers, heat, voltage drop and measurement conditions can all reduce delivered output.
