SMD LEDs can operate for tens of thousands of hours, but there is no single lifespan that applies to every LED strip. The useful life of a finished product depends on LED quality, junction temperature, drive current, PCB design, power supply and the installation environment.
LEDs usually become dimmer gradually rather than failing like an incandescent lamp. Manufacturers may describe life using an L value. L70, for example, is the point at which light output has declined to 70% of its initial value under stated test conditions. That does not mean every LED will suddenly switch off at that hour.
Figures such as 25,000 or 50,000 hours can be useful for comparison only when the test conditions and failure criteria are known. A component rating should not automatically be presented as the guaranteed life of a complete strip installation.
Heat is one of the most important factors in lumen depreciation and color shift. High-output strips installed on insulating surfaces or inside unventilated spaces run hotter. A correctly sized aluminium profile can help move heat away from the PCB.
Operating above the rated voltage increases current and temperature. Poor-quality drivers may also introduce ripple, surges or unstable output. Use a regulated constant-voltage supply that matches the strip and has reasonable capacity headroom.
Long runs can become dimmer and warmer unevenly. Calculate load and cable size, then add power feeds where required. Loose or undersized connectors create resistance and localized heating.
Water ingress can corrode copper pads and components. Oils, solvents, salt and cleaning chemicals may also attack coatings and adhesives. Select the protection method for the actual environment and seal every cut end and cable entry.
When comparing products, ask for the strip’s power, LED package, PCB construction, thermal test conditions and warranty terms—not only a headline hour figure. ZBL Lighting can help match an SMD strip and power configuration to the required operating schedule.
