How to choose outdoor lighting strips?

Published: February 15, 2023 Updated: November 14, 2023 872

Choose an outdoor LED strip by its actual exposure—not simply by the word “waterproof”. A covered balcony, a wet façade and an underwater feature require different construction, connectors and installation methods.

Match the IP rating to the location

  • IP65: suitable for dust and occasional water jets when connections remain protected.
  • IP67: appropriate for temporary water exposure, provided every cut and joint is resealed correctly.
  • IP68: intended for continuous immersion only when the complete assembly is certified for the required depth and conditions.

The weakest point is often the cable entry, connector or field-cut end—not the silicone covering. Review our LED strip IP-rating guide before specifying the product.

Choose voltage and plan the feed points

24 V strips are often practical for longer architectural runs because current and voltage drop are lower than an equivalent 12 V system. Calculate watts per metre, cable length and injection points before installation. Keep drivers in a ventilated, serviceable enclosure with the correct environmental rating.

Check materials and temperature

Outdoor projects must tolerate UV exposure, heat, cold, salt air and cleaning chemicals. Ask whether the jacket resists yellowing and whether the adhesive is intended only for positioning. Mechanical clips or an aluminum profile normally provide more dependable support.

Installation checklist

  • Test every reel before cutting.
  • Use compatible end caps, sealant and connectors.
  • Create a drip loop at cable entries.
  • Avoid low points where water can collect.
  • Allow for thermal expansion and future servicing.
  • Do not energize the strip until seals have cured.

Frequently asked questions

Is IP65 enough for outdoor use?

It can be suitable in sheltered areas, but not for standing water or continuous heavy exposure.

Can waterproof strip be cut?

Only at marked cut points, and the new end must be resealed with the specified materials.

Can outdoor strip rely on adhesive tape?

Adhesive alone is rarely the best long-term support outdoors. Use clips or profiles appropriate to the surface.
