Constant Voltage vs Constant Current LED Strips: Which System Fits Your Project?

Published: July 2, 2026 87

Most familiar LED strips are sold as 12V, 24V or 48V constant-voltage products. Constant-current designs are also used where tighter current control or longer series strings are required. The names describe how the LEDs are electrically regulated, not which product is automatically higher quality.

Quick answer

Choose constant voltage when modular cutting, parallel branches, widely available drivers and simple field service matter. Consider constant current when the product is engineered as a matched system and current uniformity or series operation provides a project advantage. Never connect a constant-current strip to a constant-voltage driver—or the reverse—unless the product documentation explicitly defines that arrangement.

How constant-voltage strips work

A constant-voltage driver maintains a nominal output such as 24V. The strip contains repeating circuits with LEDs and current-limiting components. Installers can usually cut at marked intervals and connect branches in parallel.

Strengths

  • Simple sourcing and replacement
  • Flexible cut lengths
  • Easy parallel zoning
  • Broad dimmer and controller availability

Limitations

  • Voltage drop changes current and brightness along long runs
  • Resistor losses reduce efficiency
  • Current can vary with component tolerance and temperature

How constant-current systems work

A constant-current driver regulates output current while voltage adjusts within its operating range. Some “constant-current LED strips” instead include local current-regulating components and are supplied from a stated voltage. These are different architectures, so ask for the circuit description rather than relying on the product name.

Strengths

  • Controlled LED current within the designed operating range
  • Potentially consistent output across engineered sections
  • Useful for specialised long-run or high-performance systems

Limitations

  • Driver and load must be carefully matched
  • Cutting and parallel branching may be restricted
  • Open-circuit voltage and service procedures need attention

Driver selection errors to avoid

  • Confusing driver maximum voltage with regulated output voltage
  • Connecting several constant-current branches in parallel without approved current balancing
  • Operating outside the driver’s minimum or maximum load range
  • Ignoring dimmer protocol and low-end behaviour
  • Installing the driver in an enclosure that causes thermal derating

Which should you choose?

For cabinets, coves, retail fixtures and many architectural details, constant-voltage strips remain practical. For a specialised industrial system, evaluate the full architecture: section length, redundancy, driver location, field replacement and certification. If the primary issue is a dark far end, first determine whether a higher-voltage constant-voltage product and better feed design solves it.

ZBL Lighting manufactures a broad selection of SMD LED strips, COB LED strips and higher-voltage industrial solutions. Tell us the run length and wiring constraints rather than specifying a regulation method by name alone.

FAQ

Is every 24V strip constant voltage?

Most are, but verify the datasheet. A nominal supply voltage does not fully describe internal regulation.

Can I use a larger constant-current driver?

Current must match the LED system. A driver with excessive regulated current can damage the load.

Which system dims better?

Both can dim well when driver, controller and strip are designed together. Compatibility matters more than the label.
